Birmingham based Horton Estates deputy chairman, Peter Horton has a family link stretching back to his great, great grandfather Isaac who began the company in 1871 when he acquired the Midland Hotel now the Burlington) and set about developing it. Issac, buried in the Key Hill Cemetery in 1880 he was responsible for building the Grand Hotel and at the time of his death established a substantial property empire.

Birmingham City Council have just announced a £120,000 project to restore the historic gates and walls at Grade II listed Key Hill Cemetery with a further £150,000 to repair and restore Key Hill and Warstone Lane cemeteries themselves (see the photos of both Cemeteries on this website)

At a time when the Subway nightclub has come under fire for making unbelievable offers to clubbers, the goverment only today has tightened the law on under age drinking.
Club entry and 12 free drinks all for £10.00 seems unbelievable to most people and it does make one wonder how they can afford to do it.

A number of schemes have been announced to help the Jewellery Quarter become even more important to our nation’s heritage.
Aspiring jewellery maker entrepreneurs in the Jewellery Quarter can look forward to a ‘golden future’ after Birmingham City Council agreed to £668,000 of investment for an innovative new business incubation centre. Further schemes are as follows :
1. £l.5m development of the Golden Square, a new public space at the heart of Quarter – work due to begin later this year
2. A campaign to have the Jewellery Quarter listed as ‘World Heritage Site’
3. £120,000 project to restore historic gates and walls at Grade II listed Key Hill Cemetery. With a further £150,000 to repair and restore Key Hill and Warstone Lane cemeteries themselves. Which from a personal point of view is long over due!
4. Extension of the Midlands METRO which will for the first time create a direct rail link from the Jewellery Quarter directly to the city centre, New Street Gateway and beyond…full story

BIRMINGHAM City Council has pledged to invest pounds 5 million in the historic Jewellery Quarter. Councilor Summerfield said: “I’m happy to set the record straight. We are committed, with our partners, to record levels of investment in the Jewellery Quarter. On a personal note a commitment to do something with restoration of our famous “Key Hill Cemetery” is long over due having seen its lack of attention of the years.
